Typography in Motion
n exploration of kinetic typography through emotive inspired prompts. In this project, I was tasked to join up with a Graphic Designer Thando Gazide to create three animated gifs that told our GDC story. GDC or Greenside Design Centre is a Design collage, hosting a range of full-time, part-time, online and offline students. Many of us come from different backgrounds, stages of life and dreams. Summarising our diverse narratives as students of GDC called on understanding not only our individual stories but how our peers experienced GDC as well!
A collaboration of G's
What happens when you as a group of design students to draw a geometric, black G on a plain white background!!!
Simple vectorisation of hand drawn G's!
The final collection ready to be turned into the first day Jitters!
Playing with Colour
One of the biggest challenges was finding colour palettes that both Thando and I agreed on. There were lots of back and forths and minor changes, creating a wide range of colour palette options. Not all of them made it to the animation stage, and some of them were just for a bit of fun experimentation! Let me know in the comments which of these you'd have used!
Trial and Error
The progression of our designs. Thando focused on Dramatic, and I was responsible for Futuristic and Jittery. Communicating was often interesting, and ideas lost in translation between us, but we both tried to stay positive and keep our communication open. Dramatic didn't go through the dramatic changes I hoped, and the colour palette had to be re-worked on Jittery and well futuristic I needed to be braver in my exploration.
The project was quite intense for three weeks of juggling work and studying, with the added complication of having to work with someone who we've never met before and needed to do everything online! But the first and lasts show that collaboration is always possible!
The Final Narrative
We all begin new journeys nervous, and excited a kind of anticipation that sends shivers through the fibres of our very being! However, you're not alone in those first-day Jitters. It's an individual experience, but you have a group who understands the nervousness of what is to come and what will be.

They're there to help you through those DRAMATIC days. The days when deadlines fast approaching bombard you from nowhere! The days when you're elated with feedback and the days no one prepares you for. When life is extra spicey and extra sweet you can't help but think what the hell am I doing here!!!

That being said they're with you and they're taking on the world with you. You're building connections in a futuristic world you can't even predict. In a world taken over by AI and technology beyond your dreams,  it's hard to not feel alone like you're flickering in space when you've burst out of the educational bubble.
